Cleveland Smart Square Putter Review – PluggedInGolf.com
Hi, this is Matt Saternus for Plugged In Golf and in this video I'm going to review the
Cleveland Smart Square putter. Let's get plugged in.
The Smart Square is the latest putter to come to market with an alignment story. In this
case, it's simply that these two squares are easier to line up than two balls. This putter
is obviously going to remind a lot of people of the Odyssey Two Ball and that's not a comparison
that Cleveland shies away from. In their marketing, they say that two squares is better than two
balls and their independent research shows that players actually align the two squares
better than two balls.
For the look of the putter Cleveland went with a very simple black and white scheme
and the looks are really a lot better than the $140 price tag would lead you to expect.
The sole in particular is very cool looking with different textures of black, the gloss
and the matte, there's no color anywhere, particularly at address you're just going
to see the two squares in white on that black matte putter which makes it very easy to focus
on the alignment aspects of this putter.
This is an insert putter, but unlike most inserts, the feel off of this is very firm.
Even if you don't like inserts typically, you definitely want to try this out. The feel
is very firm, more similar to a metal or a milled face, there's good feedback across
the face so you know if you missed the center a little bit heel or toe.
For the performance testing, I had a number of different golfers try the Smart Square
and to a man they all said they liked it. They said that they found the two squares
were very easy to align, the 360 gram head felt nice and weighty but not too heavy, just
nice and stable, and for players with a straight back straight through swing who want to keep
that face more square to the target, it worked really well. So if you're a player who needs
help with alignment or if you're just somebody who likes face balanced mallets and are looking
for something new to add to your putter collection or try out, I think I'd definitely recommend
the Cleveland Smart Square. The looks are much better than you'd expect at that $140
price point, the feel is good, it's quite different from most inserts, and for people
who like alignment aids, they found that the two squares do actually help alignment.
